Cure Yeast Infections Naturally
You are not alone
I used to be one of the tens of millions of women every year who experience yeast infections and urinary tract infections. Women, men and children all suffer from yeast infections. If you do too, then you know that finding a way to rid yourself of these problems forever without using harsh drugs but by actively restoring your system to a healthy, natural balance is what we’ve all been looking for.
Drugs Are Not The Answer
It’s true that powerful drugs can eradicate most yeast and bacterial infections, but if the underlying conditions that make you vulnerable to these pathogens are not corrected, then these bacteria and yeasts can, and often do, return. The problem is that drugs kill the beneficial bacteria along with the harmful bacteria and so they create perfect conditions for the harmful microorganisms to come back and gain control. The medicine you take to treat the problem actually can make it worse in the long run!
I knew there had to be a better way and so I was happy to find that new studies are revealing that restoring a healthy probiotic balance significantly protects against chronic fungal and bacterial infections. In a very simple way, you can restore your natural balance and live free of chronic infection.
Bacteria Are Both Friend And Foe
We typically think of bacteria as enemies, causing diseases like tuberculosis or anthrax, but we should also be aware that some bacteria, like those that produce lactic acid, can be very beneficial. In fact, humans and certain “friendly” bacteria have had a symbiotic relationship since the beginning.
As soon as we are born, beneficial bacteria start colonizing the body in such places as the mouth, the digestive tract and the vagina. When the beneficial bacteria dominate, optimal health is maintained.
In the intestine, friendly bacteria maintain the health of the intestinal lining and there is emerging evidence that they also boost immunity. (Bacteria and Mucosal Immunity – Digestive and Liver Disease - 2006 Dec, 38)
When these friendly bacteria dominate, they prevent harmful bacteria from getting started, not only by physically crowding them out but by also giving off natural inhibitors that prevent the harmful bacteria from gaining a foothold.
These friendly microorganisms also help maintain the body’s supplies of vitamin K and folic acid by interacting with the body’s cells in a way that researches call a “highly complex, yet harmonious relationship” as well as helping to regulate natural immunity. Optimal health depends on high levels of beneficial bacteria.
Bacteria Are A Girl’s Best Friend
It is the colonization of the vaginal tract by friendly bacteria (especially Lactobacillus) that helps protect women against a number of common infections. They do this by producing their own natural disinfectants and by maintaining an optimal pH that promotes beneficial bacteria and obstructs harmful bacteria and other pathogens.
Lactobacillas bacteria, for example, produce lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide and various bacteriocins which inhibit the growth of molds (yeasts) and the harmful bacteria which cause the disease known as bacterial vaginosis.
How We Get Out of Balance
Many factors may upset the balance of friendly microorganisms such as taking antibiotic medicines, changes in diet, smoking, changes in sexual partners and repetitive cycles of high stress.
Regardless of the cause, the natural balance is upset and an overgrowth of a pathogen occurs and it becomes the dominant organism in its environment. This is a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis.
Bacterial vaginosis (not yeast infection) is actually the most common vaginal infection in women of child bearing age. This condition is often accompanied by odor, discharge, pain and itching or burning.
B. vaginosis is caused by anaerobic bacteria such as Gardnerella or Mycoplasma, among others. The known risk factors for this condition are a previous infection with herpes simplex2, multiple partners and low levels of Lactobacilli (Sexually Transmitted Diseases – 2008, Jan;35(1):78-83).
A Common Problem
According to an article published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, more than 300 million cases of urinary tract infections, bacterial vaginosis, and yeast vaginitis are reported yearly. Nearly 75% of American women have at least one yeast infection during their child bearing years and 40% or more will have recurring outbreaks and as many as 8% will develop chronic yeast infections. Yeast infections are also common in men and children. If you’re suffering from yeast or bacterial infections, you’re definitely not alone!
The Drug Approach to Treatment
Standard anti-fungal therapy for Candida infections involves creams or suppositories or systemic drugs like fluconazole. Bacterial vaginosis is treated with antibiotics such as clindamycin. For almost half of women, taking these drugs will not prevent a recurring infection.
Clearly all women could benefit from a preventative nutritional program that helps to maintain a natural balance and ends the dependency on harsh and often ineffective drugs.
Prevention Makes Sense
By carefully studying the microscopic environment of healthy women, scientists have identified certain species of bacteria that are the “good guys” and are particularly effective at maintaining a stable environment and resistance to disease states.
The Good Guys
A Scandinavian study discovered that the bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus consumed daily is particularly effective at maintaining a healthy vaginal micro-environment. This bacteria is found in healthy individuals and is known to be capable of inhibiting the growth of unhealthy types such as Gardnerella vaginalis and Candida albicans.
What We’ve Learned
A randomized, placebo controlled Canadian study of 64 healthy women showed that two months of taking the oral probiotics Lactobacillus rhamnosus & Lactobacillus reuteri changed their vaginal micro-environment from one favoring pathogenic species to one favoring normal healthy species for 37% of women versus only 13% for the placebo.
This study and others like it have demonstrated convincing evidence that oral supplementation with certain probiotics can provide significant protection against vaginal disorders. As I said earlier, these are the organisms that are known to dominate in healthy individuals and by adding them to your diet, you too will be able to maintain a healthy balanced system that naturally rejects the harmful yeasts and bacteria that cause vaginal infections.
If you decide to add probiotics to your healthy eating program, be sure to look for products that contain the proven species Lactobacillus rhamnosus & Lactobacillus reuteri.
